IPL – Intense Pulsed Light
IPL is a technology that uses a series of intense pulses of light (NOT laser) to treat a variety of conditions. IPL was originally used to treat rosacea and it was found to alleviate the signs and symptoms of dry eyes!
The IPL device emits broad spectrum light in pulses which targets specific chromophores (color-absorbing molecules) in the skin, like melanin (the component in our skin responsible for pigmentation) as well as hemoglobin (found in blood vessels).
The root cause of dry eyes and Meibomian gland disease involves inflammation. Abnormal blood vessels grow and cause the cycle of inflammation.
The light works to close off these abnormal vessels, reduce bacteria, reduce Demodex mites, and improve the meiboman glands as well as the tears produced.
What to expect:
needs and more sessions may be required to reach the desired result. Maintenance sessions are to be expected 1-4x yearly or as needed.
You should arrive to your appointment wearing no makeup, lotions or sunscreen.
Your skin will be prepped with a cleansing cloth to remove any debris or oils. Protective eyewear will be placed over your eyes. The light is very bright and you will likely still see it through your closed eyes and eyewear. A cool gel will be applied to the entirety of your face or any areas where treatment will take place. Four rounds total are performed per session, starting with a large applicator followed by a smaller handpiece.
Pulses should not hurt but you may be sensitive to the first few until you become accustomed to the feeling. It may be described as a rubber band snap on the skin. Areas with hair may be particularly sensitive as the treatment targets pigment cells – (shaving the area prior to arriving to your appointment will help).
Generally, results are to be expected a few weeks after third or fourth session, but some people begin to feel relief after the first session; others require 5 or more before symptoms let up. This depends on length and severity of disease prior to starting treatment. Results may vary.
